Private house - Malta
Situated on a hillside in the southern part of Dohuk, this modern residence has an impressive dual view – towards Mount Zawa to the south and with panoramic views of the city skyline to the north. The house was designed in 2019 for a family of three – a mother and her two children. Interestingly, the client is the daughter of a previous client for whom I designed a house in 2005, creating an architectural dialogue across generations.
From the outset, the project was shaped around the client’s specific needs. The primary requirement was to create a sense of privacy while maintaining an open and inviting atmosphere. A clear spatial hierarchy was established: guest and family spaces are intentionally separated but can easily be connected for larger family gatherings. This flexible layout ensures privacy without compromising on hospitality.
The home is spread over three floors. On the entrance floor there is an open but well-defined living area, consisting of a family living room, kitchen and a guest bedroom with en suite bathroom. Each room opens up to the garden and the expansive views, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light.
The second floor houses the private living spaces adapted to the family's daily life. The children have their own bedrooms and a multifunctional playroom that also serves as a study and relaxation area. This floor emphasizes comfort and personal space, while maintaining a visual connection to the landscape outside.
The basement level houses more functional and recreational spaces, including a garage, storage space, and an indoor pool designed for year-round use.
The choice of materials plays a crucial role in the aesthetic and functional expression of the project. The facade is characterized by simplicity and durability, where carefully selected wood and granite details highlight the balconies and the main entrance. Inside, warm wooden floors contrast with mainly plaster-clad walls, chosen for their insulating properties and ease of maintenance.
Ultimately, the design balances openness and privacy, modernity and warmth, creating a home that not only meets the client's needs but also harmonizes with its surroundings.
